Supercinema: The Nightmare Before Christmas Comes Alive

I am the shadow on the moon at night / Filling your dreams to the brim with fright.

When people dream of living in New York, they inevitably dream of the nightlife, glittering and dangerous. It is part of the lustre, the allure, the magic.  It is also, like so many things of that ilk, an illusion best appreciated from a distance. You get too close and the dirt shows.

Or maybe I’m just getting old.

There is magic to be had here, sure, especially if you are willing to pay for it. But it is hard to separate the really amazing, transporting, live-another-life-for-one-night experiences from the schlock.

Enter: Supercinema.

This monthly party at the McKittrick Hotel, from the people behind Sleep No More and Gallow Green, has become one of my favorite indulgences.  Every month they pick a movie as the theme – the past year has seen James Bond, The Great Gatsby, The Wizard of Oz, and Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet.

At it’s core, the Supercinema is a dance party, with live performances scattered across high-energy DJ sets.  But no one knows how to transform a space like these folk. From super creative costuming to fully-immersive, atmospheric mazes through the McKittrick Hotel – they make it easy to pretend you are someone else for the night.

Here are a few snaps from my night out at the Gatsby do:

THIS SATURDAY is the latest explosion of creative crazy and I couldn’t be more excited!  Everything the past few weeks has been all about escapism, and this is the perfect pinnacle for that.

The space will transform into a creepy, crawly, Holiday mash-up, with their latest party theme –  The Nightmare Before Christmas.  Tickets are still available on their website here.

Now, I have a week to pretend to work, while really planning my costume. That is one nice thing about NYC, you are never the weirdest one here.

ANYHOWWWWWW. I’ll report back with lots of photos (We take the photo taking bits of the party VERY seriously).
